WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake just for me, and I knew that little things are special things.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I believed there is a God I could always talk to.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I felt you kiss me goodnight, and I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, and it's really okay to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked . . . and wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.

When I thought you weren't looking, I climbed up onto the counter, reached on top of the fridge and ate a chocolate chip cookie, and felt accomplishment because I was able to get it myself.

When I thought you weren't looking, I gave our cat some extra milk, because I wanted to share while I got some for me!

When I thought you weren't looking, I licked the icing off of my favorite cake, and I knew that you make the bestest cakes in the whole wide world.

When I thought you weren't looking, I skipped my prayers one night, and felt so guilty that I said my morning prayers twice, just to make up for it.

When I thought you weren't looking, I gave our puppy a kiss, he wagged his tail and licked a lot, and I felt warmth, love and really, really wet!

When I thought you weren't looking, I cried because of the nasty things that the kids around me said. But I learned from you that friends accept you exactly as you are.

When I thought you weren't looking, I made you breakfast; blackened the bacon, hardened the eggs, burnt the toast, and carried it up to you on a tray. Then heard you say, that I was a really good cook.

When I thought you weren't looking, I tried to do new things . . . because of your encouragement, patience and love. And now I just want to say "thanks" for all the things you let me do, When I thought you weren't looking.
